Question

A ball floats on the surface of water in a container exposed to the atmosphere. Will the ball remain immersed at its initial depth or will it sink or rise somewhat if the container is shifted to the moon?

Solution

Let the volume immersed in the liquid initially be Vs and mass of the body be m.
Since the body is floating, so mg force is balanced by buoyancy force.
So, mg=ρlVsg
We get, Vs=mρl
Thus, Vs is independent og g.
On moon, value of g changes but Vs remains the same. Thus the body will remain immersed at its initial depth.
