Question

A ball is allowed to fall freely from a height of 3 metres on to a fixed plate. The successive rebound heights are h1,h2,h3, lf the distance covered by the ball before coming to rest is y metres, find y. (Given that the coefficient of restitution is 0.5)

Open in App
Solution

Let v1 be the velocity with which the ball strikes the plate v1 be the velocity of rebound.
Let H be the height from which the ball is dropped.

v1=2gH

v1=2gh1

e=v1v1=h1H

e2=h1Hh1=e2H

Similarly,
h2=e2h1=e4H and so on.

Total distance described before it comes to stop

y=H+2h1+2h2+2h3+....

=H+2e2H+2e4H+2e6H+..

=H(1+2e2+2e4+2e6+....)

=H[1+2e2(1+e2+e4+...)]

=H[1+2e2.11e2]

=H[1+e21e2]

=3[1+0.5210.52]=5metres
