Question

A ball is let to fall from a height hs. It makes n collisions with the horizontal ground. If after n collisions it rebounds with a velocity va and the ball rises to a height ha, then the coefficient of restitution for the collision is :

Open in App
Solution

Height = h0

collision is = vn

height = hn

coefficient of restitution = e

The velocity of the earth before and after collision may be assumed zero.

Hence en=v1v0×v2v1×v3v2×.........vnvn1

vn = velocity after nth rebound

v0 = velocity with which the ball strikes the earth first time

Hence en = vnv0

= 2ghn2gh0

en=hnh0
