Question

A ball is moving with speed 3 m/s in downward direction and the surface is moving with a constant speed of 2 m/s upwards as shown in figure. After collision with the surface of coefficient of restitution e=0.8, the ball rebounds back with speed v m/s. Find the value of ′v′. (Assume the surface doesn't change its velocity)

Solution

The correct option is D 6 m/s
Given,
Speed of the ball before collision (u1)=3 m/s
Speed of the surface before collision (u2)=2 m/s
Speed of the surface after collision (v2)=2 m/s

Let the speed of the ball after collision (v1)=v m/s

Coefficient of restitution (e)=0.8
We know that,
Coefficient of restitution (e)=v2v1u1u2
(taking upward direction +ve)
0.8=2v32 v=6 m/s
