Question

A ball of mass 50g moving at a speed of 2.0m/s strikes a plane surface at an angle of incidence 45o The ball is reflected by the plane at equal angle of reflection with the same speed. Calculate (a) the magnitude of the change in momentum of the ball (b) the change in the magnitude of the momentum of the ball

Open in App
Solution

Given,

Mass of ball =50g=0.05kg

v=2cos450^i2sin450^j

v1=2cos450^i2sin450^j

(a) Change in momentum mvmv1

0.05(2cos450^i2sin450^j)0.05(2cos450^i2sin450^j)

0.1cos450^i0.1sin450^j+0.1cos450^i+0.1sin450^j

0.2cos450^i

Therefore , Magnitude =[0.22]2=0.22=0.21.4=0.14kgm/s

(b) Change in magnitude of momentum of the ball =P(initial)P(final)

=(2×0.5)(2×0.5)=0
