Question

A balloon filled with an ideal gas is taken from the surface of the sea to the depth of 100m. What will be the volume in terms of its original volume?

Open in App
Solution

Pressure at surface of sea = 760 mm Hg

= 1033.3 cm H2O

= 10.3 m H2O

Pressure at 100 m depth = 100 + 10.3 = 110.3 m H2O

Assuming temperature to constant,

P1V1 (at surface) = P2V2 (at 100 m depth)

10.3 x V1 = 110.3 x V2

V2 = 0.093 V1

= 9.3% of V1.
