Question

A balloon is filled with helium at the atmospheric pressure P0. The volume of spherical balloon is v0. After being released, the balloon burst at an altitude where the atmospheric pressure is Po2. Before bursting the balloon has volume 5V04, temperature remaining the same. If the mass of material of balloon is m and density at the time of bursting is ρo, then:

Solution

Let us denote the final volume and pressure by,

V=54V0 & P

Helium as an ideol gas,

P0V0=PV (isothermol)

P=P0V0V=0.8P0

Since external pressure =P02=0.5P0

Net outword pressure on the surface of balloon =0.8P00.5P0=0.3P0

Net pressure force =PA=0.3P0πR2

Aslo 54V0=43πR3

But this must just balance the elastic force σΔA where ΔA=2πRt (t is thickness of balloon material obtained from density

ρ0=m4πR2t

So,[σ=9P0V0ρ016m]
Hence, the correct options are, (b,d)
