A bar magnet takes π10second to complete one oscillation in an oscillation magnetometer. The moment of inertia of the magnet about the axis of rotation is 1.2×104 kg m3 and the earth's horizontal magnetic field is 30μ T. Find the magnetic moment of the magnet.

According to oscillation magnetometer,

T= 2π1MBH

π10=2π1.2×104M×30×106

(120)2=1.2×104M×30×106

M = 1.2×104×40030×106

= 16×102Am2

= 1600 A-m2
