Let the average of the batsman after 16 innings be x

Then the total runs he scored after 16 innings = 16x

Given that his average increases by 3 after he scores 87 runs in 17^th inning

Total runs he scores after 17 innings can be written in two forms.

Average of the batsman after 17 innings = x+3

Then, 17(x + 3) = 16x + 87

17x + 51 = 16x + 87

x = 87 - 51 = 36
