From maximum power transfer theorem,

External resistance = Internal resistance

Given, Rin=4 Ω

External resistance should also be 4 Ω (1)



The network of resistances, connected across the battery, is actually a Wheatstone bridge in balanced condition.

Req=3R×6R3R+6R=3R×6R9R=2R ......(2)

For maximum power, 2R=4 Ω

R=2 Ω
