Question

A beam of protons with a velocity 4×105m/s enters a uniform magnetic field of 0.3 tesla at an angle 60o to the magnetic field. Find the radius of the helical path taken by the proton beam. Also find the pitch of the helix(which is the distance travelled by a proton in the beam parallel to the magnetic field during one period of rotation).

Solution

For circular motion, F=qvBsinθ=mv2r

r=mvqBsinθ

r=1.67×1027×4×105×21.6×1019×0.3×3

r=1.6×102m=1.6cm

Pitch, P=vcosθ×T

T=2πrvsinθ

P=2πrtanθ=2×π×1.6×1023

P=5.8×102m=5.8cm
