Question

A bi-convex lens is formed with two thin plano convex lenses as shown in the figure. Refractive index μ of the first lens is 1.5 and that of the second lens is 1.2. Both the curved surfaces are of the same radius of curvature R=14 cm. For an object placed at a distance of 40 cm infront of lens, the image distance will be

Solution

For plano convex lens,
f1=R(μ11)=141.51=28 cm
f2=R(μ21)=141.21=70 cm
Equivalent focal length of setup is
1feq=1f1+1f2=128+170
1feq=5+2140=7140=120
feq=20 cm
Now, using lens formula,
1v=1f+1u=120140
1v=2140=140
v=40 cm
