Question

A biconvex lens is formed with two thin plano-convex lenses as shown in figure. Refractive index of left lens is 1.5 and that of right lens is 1.2. Both the curved surfaces are of same radius of curvature R=14 cm. For this bi-convex lens, for an object distance of 40 cm, the image distance (in cm) will be –

Solution

Given,
μ1=1.5

μ2=1.2

R1=R2=R=14 cm

u=40 cm

The equivalent focal length by the combination of lenses is
{By the lens maker formula 1f=(μ2μ11)(1R11R2)}

1f=1f1+1f2

(μ11)(1R1)+(μ21)(11(R))

f=20 cm

By the lens formula is
Now 1v1u=1f

v=40 cm
