Question

A binary data is transmitted through an ideal AWGN channel with infinte bandwidth. The two-sided power spectral density of the noise is N0/2. If the average energy is transmitted per bit is Eb then the minimum value of (Eb/N0) required, for error free transmission, will be_______dB.
  1. -1.6

Solution

The correct option is A -1.6
From the Shannon's channel capacity theorem,
c=Blog2(1+SN); S=EbRb and N=N0B
When the channel is ideal with infinite BW,
C=SN0log2(e)
For error free transmission,
RbC
RbSN0log2(e)=EbRbN0log2(e)
EbN0=loge(2)
(EbN0)min=loge(2)=0.693
In decilogs,
[(EbN0)min]dB=10log10(0.693)dB1.60dB
