Question

A bird is flying 12m above the surface of a pond. The apperant position of the bird as viewed by a fish 1m below the surface is ? n of water = 1.33

Solution

The height of the bird from the surface of the pond = 12m

The distance of the fish from the surface of the water = 1 m

We know that the apparent depth in air / real depth in air = μ

Hence, apparent depth in air / 12 = 4/3

So, apparent depth in air = 4/3 * 12 = 16m

The fish will see the bird at = 16m + 1m (as fish is 1 m below the surface of water) = 16 + 1 = 17m
