Question

A block A of mass m1 rests on a rough horizontal surface. The coefficient of friction, between the block and the surface is μ. A uniform plank B of mass m2 rests on A. B is prevented form moving by connecting it to a light rod and hinged at point P. the coefficient of friction between A and B is μ. Find the acceleration of blocks A and C..

Solution

On mass m1 forces acting in horizontal direction are :
(i) friction due to m2=μm2g leftard
(ii) friction due to ground =μ(m1+m2)g leftward (As friction =μN)
(iii) Tension of staring (T) rightward.

So, Tμ1g2μm2g=m1α(1)
For m3 mass : m3gT=m3α(2)
Adding equation 1 and 2 we get :
m3gμm2g=(m1+m3)α

α=(m3μm12μm2)gm1+m3
