Question

A block is moving on an inclined plane making an angle 450 with the horizontal and the coefficient of friction is μ. The force required to just push it up the inclined plane is 3 times the force required to just prevent it from sliding down.If we define N=10μ, then N is

Solution

(i) when force is applied up along the slope to push if up
As N=mg
f1=μ+mg12=μmg2+mg2
(ii) when the force is applied up the slope to prevent sliding
Here also,
N=mg
f2mg=μN
f2=μmg2+mg2
It is given that.
f1=3f2
So, μg+mg2=3mg23μmg2
μ+1=33μ
μ=2/4=0.5
So, Oμ is 5
