Solution

The correct option is B μ=0.5
Given,
Angle of inclination of plane θ=45
Co-efficient of friction =μ

Let us suppose, force required to just prevent sliding down of block is Fo, then force required to just push it up= 3Fo. [given]

Case - 1 : Friction (f) will act upwards as block has tendency to slide down and to prevent sliding, we have to apply Fo in upward direction along inclined plane.

On applying F=ma along the inclined plane.
Fo+fmgsinθ=ma
[Block is about to slide down, a=0]
Fo+f=mgsinθ ..............(1)

Case - 2 : Friction (f) will act downward as block will have tendency to slide up when 3Fo force is applied upward.

On applying F=ma along the inclined plane.
3Fomgsinθf=ma
[Block is about to slide up, a=0]
3Fo=mgsinθ+f
Fo=f3+mgsinθ3 ..........(2)

On putting value of equation (2) in (1),
f3+mgsinθ3+f=mgsinθ
4f3=2mgsinθ3
f=mgsinθ2
μmgcosθ=mgsinθ2
[f=μN=μmgcosθ, in limiting case]
μg=gtanθ2
μ=tan452
[where θ=45]
μ=0.5
