Question

A block is projected with speed 20 m/s on a rough horizontal surface. The coefficient of friction (μ) between the surfaces varies with time (t) as shown in figure. The speed of body at the end of 4 second will be (g=10 m/s2).

Solution

The correct option is A 2 m/s
From 0 to 2 sec;

frictional force =μ1mg=0.5m×10=5m

deacceleration,

a1=5mm=5m/s2

Distance travelled by block in 25s;

x1=20t12a1t2=20×212×5×22=4010=30m

Speed of block after 2s;

vu=at=205×2=10m/s

After 2s to 4s,

frictional force, f2=μ2mg=0.4×10m=4m

μ2= average from 0.5 to 0.4s

deacceleration,

a2=4mm=4m/s2

Now, new velocity after 2s is

v10=4×t

v=108=2m/s
