Question

A block of mass m is placed on a wedge. The wedge can be accelerated in four manners marked as (1), (2), (3) and (4) as shown in the figure. If the normal reactions in the situation (1), (2), (3) and (4) are N1,N2,N3 and N4 respectively and acceleration with which the block slides on the wedge in situations are b1,b2,b3 and b4 respectively then:
(A) N3>N1>N2>N4
(B) N4>N3>N1>N2
(C) b2>b3>b4>b1
(D) b2>b3>b1>b4

Solution

The correct option is D A and C
Using concept of pseudo force the given system can be reframed as shown
(1)

Balancing forces perpendicular to incline we have,
N1=mgcos37+masin37
N1=45mg+35ma
and, along incline we have
mgsin37macos37=mb1
b1=35g45a

(2)

Similarly for this case we get,
N2=mgcos37masin37
N2=45mg35ma
and, mgsin37+macos37=mb2
b2=35g+45a

(3)

Similarly, for this case we get,
N3=mgcos37+macos37
N3=45mg+45ma
and, mgsin37+masin37=mb3
b3=35g+35a

(4)

Similarly for this case we get,
N4=mgcos37macos37
N4=45mg45ma
and, mgsin37masin37=mb4
b4=35g35a

Thus, comparing the values of normal forces and accelerations, we concluded that
N3>N1>N2>N4 and b2>b3>b4>b1
