A block of mass m is stationary on a horizontal surface. It is connected with a string which has no tension. The coefficient of friction between the block and surface is μ. Then, the frictional force between the block and surface is:

the applied force is balanced by an opposite frictional force exerted on the block by the table
in order to remove the equilibrium we increase the applied force such that it can overcome the frictional force
to move the block on the surface the force requiredfmax=μ×FN
fmax is the static frictional force
μ is the coefficient of the friction
FN is the normal reaction
