Solution

Find the speed of the boat in still water when the speed of the stream is 3 km/hr:

Let the speed of the boat in still water be x km/hr.

It is given that the speed of the stream is 3 km/hr.

Upstream speed =x-3km/hr.

Downstream speed =x+3km/hr.

We know that,

Distance=Time×Speed.

Also given that a boat covers a certain distance downstream in 5 hours but it takes 11 hours to cover the same distance upstream.

5x+3=11x-35x+15=11x-336x=48x=8

Hence, the speed of the boat in still water is 8km/hr.
