Question

A bob attached to a light string is rotating in a vertical circle of radius 5 m. If the velocity of the bob at its lowest point is twice the velocity of the bob when it makes an angle of 900 with the vertical. Will the bob complete a full circle? If yes, what is the velocity of the bob at its highest point?

A
The bob will not complete the full circle.

Solution

The correct option is A The bob will not complete the full circle.
The bob does not have any potential energy at its lowest point. It has both potential and kinetic energies when it makes an angle of 900 with the vertical and when it is at its highest point.

Applying the law of conservation of energy, we get,
PEL+KEL=PE90+KE90
⇒0+12m(2v)2=mgh+12mv2
⇒2v2=mgr+12v2⇒3v2=2gr⇒v=√2gr3=5.77 m/s
Applying the law of conservation of energy to the highest point of the bob, we get,
PEH+KEH=PE90+KE90⇒mg(2r)+12mv2H=mgr+12mv2⇒gr+12v2H=12v2
⇒v2H=2×(5.7722−10×5)⇒vH=√−83.35 m/s
A negative velocity is not possible. Hence the bob will not complete the full circle.
