Question

A body floats in kerosene of density 0.8×103 kg/m3 up to a certain mark.If the same body is placed in water of density 10×103 kg/m3,will it sink more or less ? Give reason for your answer.

Solution

In the second case, the object will sink less. When the object was placed in Kerosene, which is of less density, it floated to a certain mark. This was because the density of the substance was slightly less than the density of kerosene. However, the density of water is more than the density of kerosene, and the difference between the density of the fluid and the object increases. This leads to more buoyant force, and the sunk part decreases
