Question

A body goes from A to B with a speed of 60Km/hand then returns to the starting point with a speed of 40Km/h.

Find (a) the average speed

(b) the average velocity of the body.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Initial speed (v1)=60Km/h

Final speed (v2)=40Km/h

Step 2: Formula Used

As we need to calculate the average speed (vav) and average velocity (vav)for the whole journey, the formulas used will be:

vav=v1+v22

vav=TotaldisplacementTotaltime

Step 3: Calculation of average speed (vav) for the whole journey

vav=60Km/h+40Km/h2

vav=1002

vav=50Km/h

Step 4: Calculation of average velocity (vav) for the whole journey

As the body returns to the point from where it started, the total displacement will be zero.

vav=02

vav=0

Therefore, if a body goes from A to B with a speed of 60Km/h and then returns to the starting point with a speed of40Km/h, then (a) the average speed will be 50Km/h and (b) the average velocity of the body will be zero.
