A body is acted upon by two forces each of magnitude F, but in opposite directions. State the effect of the forces if
(a) both forces act at the same point of the body.
(b) the two forces act at two different points of the body at a separation r.
(i) Since the two forces are equal and opposite, the resultant of the two is zero. Moreover, since the two forces act on the same point or same line of action, there are no moments of force. Hence, there is no motion.
(ii) The net force will be zero but there will be a net non-zero moment. So, a rotational motion will be produced.
