Question

A body is thrown up with a kinetic energy of 100J Find the potential energy at the topmost point.

Open in App
Solution

Given kinetic energy when the body is thrown up is100J.

Law of conservation of energy states that energy can be neither created nor destroyed. Applying this law,

  1. When the body is just thrown, the total mechanical energy is equal to the kinetic energy of the body only because, at the ground level, P.E is considered Zero.
  2. When the body reaches the topmost point, the velocity becomes zero which results in Zero kinetic energy.
  3. As the kinetic energy is zero, the total Mechanical energy becomes only P.E which will be equal to100J.

Therefore, the P.E at the topmost point is100J.
