Question

A body mass M at rest is struck by a moving body of mass m. Show that the fraction of the initial kinetic energy of moving mass m transferred to the strucked body is 4mM/(m+M)2.

Solution

  • Let the body of mass m moves with velocity u towards mass M at rest.

  • initial K.E. of the moving body

E1=12mu21

= 12mu2

After collision,

v2 = 2m1u1m1+m2 + (m2m1)u2m1+m2

=2mum+M+0

= 2mum+M
Kinetic energy of the mass M,

E2=12m2v22

=12M(2muM+m)2

= 2Mm2u2(M+m)2

Hence, fraction of K.E. transferred. ,

E2E1=2Mm2u2(m+M)2(12mu2)

= 4Mm(M+m)2
