Question

A body mass m is attached to the lower end of a spring whose upper end is fixed. The spring has negligible mass. When the mass m is slightly pulled down and released, it oscillates with a time period of 3 s. When the mass m is increased by 2 kg, the time period of oscillations becomes 5 s. The value of m in kg is

Solution

The correct option is A 98
Time period of simple spring-mass system is,
T1=2πmk=3 s(1)
When mass incresed by 2 kg, time period becomes
T2=2πm+2k=5 s(2)
Dividing equation (2) by equation (1),
T2T1=m+2m=53
m+2m=259
1+2m=259
2m=169
m=98 kg
