A body of mass 1 Kg initially at rest explodes and breaks into three fragments of masses in the ration 1:1:3 The two pieces of equal mass fly off perpendicular to each other with a speed of 30ms1 each. What is the velocity of the heavier fragment?

Given that,

Mass m=1kg

Velocity v=30m/s

According to law of conservation of linear momentum

m1v1+m2v2+m3v3=0

30+30+3v3=0

v3=20m/s2

Hence, the velocity of the heavier fragment is -20 m/s
