A body of mass 1 kg moving in the x-direction suddenly explodes in two fragments of mass 1/8 kg and 7/8 kg . An instant later the smaller fragment is 0.14m above x-axis . The position of the heavier fragment is ?

Solution

We are calculating the displacement from x-axis (X)
the product o mass and displacement will be a constant for the two bodies.

M1X1 = M2X2
1/8 x 0.14 = 7/8 x X2
X2 = (0.14 x 8) / (8 x 7)
= 0.14/7
= 0.02 m below x-axis (since they will move in opposite direction)
