Question

A body of mass 5 kg is acted upon by two perpendicular forces 8 N and 6 N. Give the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of the body.

Open in App
Solution

Given: The mass of the body is 5kgand the two perpendicular forces are 8N and 6N.

The forces on the body are shown below:

The resultant force is given as,

F R = 8 2 + 6 2 = 64+36 =10N

The tangent of the angle is given as,

tanθ= 6 8 θ= tan 1 ( 3 4 ) =37°

Newton’s second law of the motion is given as,

F=ma

By substituting the given values in the above expression, we get

10N=( 5kg )a a=2m/ s 2

Thus, the magnitude of acceleration is 2m/ s 2 and its direction is along the direction of the resultant force. The direction of resultant force is at an angle of 37° with 8N force.
