Question

A body of mass 'm' is travelling with a velocity 'u'. When a constant retarding force 'F' is applied, it comes to rest after travelling a distance 's1'. If the initial velocity is '2u', with the same force 'F', the distance travelled before it comes to rest is 's2'. Then

Solution

The correct option is D s2=4s1
According to Newton's second law of motion,
a=F/m (ve sign as the force is retarding)

According to third equation of motion,
v2=u2+2as
Given for v=0,u=u,
Displacement is s1
s1=u22a=u2m2F................(i)

Given for second scenario,
v=0,u=2u,
Displacement is s2
s2=(2u)22a=2u2mF................(ii)

From (i) and (ii),
s2=4s1
