Question

A body slides down a smooth inclined plane when released from the top , while another body falls freely from the same point . Which one will strike the ground earlier ?

Solution

Time of fall:T=1sinθ2hgh and g are same for both bodies.Hence,T α 1sin θFor a freely falling body, angle of inclined is equal to 90 degrees, where as for the inclined plane, the angle is less than 90 degrees. As T is inversely proportional to the angle,it can be concluded that the freely falling body reaches the ground earlier.
