Question

A box weighing 2000 N is to be slowly slid through 20 m n a straight track having friction co-efficient 0.2 with the box.
(a)Find the work done by the person pulling the box with a chain at an angle θ with the horizontal.
(b)Find the work when the person has chosen a value of θ which ensures him the minimum magnitude of the force.

Solution

(a)
N=2000FsinθFcosθ=4NFcosθμ(2000Fsinθ)F=(2000×μcosθ+μsinθ)W=F.d.cosθ=dcosθ.2000×μcosθ+μsinθ=8000cosθcosθ+0.25sinθ=80001+0.2tanθ(b)F=400cosθ+0.25sinθ=400(cosθ+0.25sinθ)2.(sinθ+0.2cosθ)=0
we can minimize F or maximize
cosθ+0.25sinθd(cosθ+0.25sinθ)=0dθ(sinθ+0.2cosθ)=0tanθ=0.2cosθ=0.981
sinθ=0.196
So,
W=8000cosθcosθ+0.25sinθ
=80000.9810.981+0.25(0.2)=7690J
