A boy of mass 30 kg is sitting at a distance of 2 m from the middle of a seesaw. Where should a boy of mass 40 kg sit so as to balance the see-saw?
1.5 m
Mass1 = 30 kg (m1)
Mass2 = 40 kg (m2)
Distance of mass1 from centre = 2 m ……………(r1)
Let distance of mass2 from centre = r2.
We know for balanced condition, by Principle of Moments:
m1r1 = m2r2
60 = 40 r2
r2 = 1.5 m
This means mass m2 should be placed at 1.5 m away from the centre in opposite direction to that of mass1.
