Question

A boy pulls a toy having two carriages placed on a frictionless table by applying a force of 1.5 N at 30 degrees in a vertical plane . Calculate the acceleration of the 40g carriage . The acceleration of the 20g carriage and the tension in the string attached between the 2 carriages .

Solution

since both the blocks are joined by an inextensible string, it can be treated as a single object with mass = m1+m2=60g or 0.06kg, each having the same acceleration.
Then a =Horizontal component of F /0.06
= 1.5 cos30 /0.06 =21.6m/s^2(approx).

Now, in carriage 1, Fcos 30 - T = m1a
(Net force = m1a)
Thus T = 0.43N(approx).
