Question

A brass rod of length 40 cm is joined to a copper rod of length 50 cm. The two rods are of the same thickness and at initial temperature of 40C. What is the change in length of the combine rod, when the same is heated to 280C. Coefficients of linear expansion of brass and copper are 1.9×105 C1 and 1.7×105 C1 respectively.

Solution

We know that change in length ΔL=LαΔT
For brass :
ΔT=28040=240, L=40m, α=1.9×105oC1
ΔLbrass=40×1.9×105×240=0.1824cm
For copper :
ΔT=28040=240, L=50m, α=1.7×105oC1
ΔLcopper=50×1.7×105×240=0.204cm
Change in length of combined rod ΔL=ΔLcopper+ΔLbrass
ΔL=0.1824+0.204=.3864cm
