Question

A brother asks his sister for Rs 100 so that he can be 3 times as rich as her sister, but the sister tells her brother to give her Rs 400, so that she can be 7 times as rich as her brother. How much money do the brother and sister have now?

Let x and y be the money brother and sister have.
Now according to the question-
Condition I:-
x+100=3×(y100)
x+100=3y300
x=3y400.....(1)
Condition II:-
y+400=7×(x400)
y+400=7x2800
y=7(3y400)3200(From (1))
y=21y28003200
21yy=6000
y=600020=300
Substituting the value of y in equation (1), we have
x=3×300400=900400=500
Hence the brother and sister have Rs.500 and Rs.300 respectively.
