Question

A bubble of gas whose diameter is 2 cm is travelling in a liquid with constant velocity of 0.90 cm/s. The density of the gas is negligible and density of the liquid is 1.5 gm/cm3. Calculate the value of η.

Solution

Given, vt=90 cm s1;r=22=1 cm;
g=980 cm s2
p=0;σ=1.5 cm3;η=?
vt=2r2(pσ)g9η
90=2×(1)2(01.5)9809η=2×1×1.5×9809η
Here, (-ve) sign indicates that the bubble is moving in the upward direction
η=2×1.5×9809×90=3.6296
η=3.63 Poise
