Question

A bucket full of water is place in a room at 15C with initial relative humidity 40%. The volume of the room is 50 m3. (a) How much water will evaporate? (b) If the room temperature is increased by 5C how much more water will evaporate? The saturation vapour pressure of water at 15C and 20C are 1.6 kPa and 2.4 kPa respectively.

Solution

a) Rel. humidity is given as:
=VPSVP at 15C

0.4=VP1.6×103
VP=0.4×1.6×103

The evaporation occurs as along as the atmosphere does not become saturated

Net pressure change =1.6×1030.4×1.6×103=(1.60.4×1.6)103=0.96×103
Net mass of water evaporated
m0.96×103×50=m18×8.3×288
m=0.96×50×18×1038.3×288=361.45361g

b) At 20CSVP=2.4KPa,
At 15C Saturated Vapor Pressure =1.6KPa

Net pressure charge =(2.41.6)×103Pa=0.8×103Pa

Mass of water evaporated
m=0.8×10350=m18×8.3×293

m=0.8×50×18×10383×293=296.06296grams
