A bullet of mass 50 gm is fired from a gun towards a ball of mass 450 gm


The bullet hits the ball with speed 200 m/s in horizontal direction as shown in figure, and remains inside it. Find the magnitude of velocity of system of (ball+ bullet) after collision.

The correct option is A 20 m/s
Given, u1=200 m/s, u2=0; where u2= initial speed of ball
Mass of bullet
m1=50 gm
Mass of ball
m2=450 gm

After collision bullet gets embedded in the ball, hence the system of (ball+bullet) will move together with final speed v2 m/s.

Applying momentum conservation in horizontal direction, with X-axis taken as:


Pi=Pf
m1 u1+m2 u2=m1 v2+m2 v2
m1 u1=(m1+m2)×v2
Or, 0.05×200=(0.05+0.45)v2
v2=100.5
v2=20 m/s
