A bullet of mass 5g travelling with a velocity of 18 km/h penetrates a wodden block and comes to rest in 0.01s . Find

(1) the distance it penetrates in the wooden block

(2) the retarding force of the block

Mass of the bullet=5g=0.005kg

initial velocity (u)=18km/hr=18×5÷18m/s
=5m/s

Final velocity(v)=0m/s

Time taken(t)=0.01s

1)
Displacement=average velocity×time taken
={(v+u)/2}×t={(5+0)÷2}×0.01=0.025m=25mm

2)
Retarding force=mass×retardation
=m×(u-v)/t
=0.005×(5-0)/0.01
=2.5N
