Question

A bus covers a distance of 240 km at a uniform speed. Due to heavy rain its speed gets reduced by 10 km/h and as such it takes two hrs longer to cover the total distance. Assuming the uniform speed to be `x` km/h form an equation and solve it to evaluate `x`.

Solution

Then let the speed of the bus bexkmhr
Then time taken by the bus for the first=240x hrs.
and
time taken by the bus after raining to cover the remaining distance =240x10

by the question we have,

(240x10)(240x)=2hrs

(240x24)(x10)(x10)(x)=2

240x240x+2400=2x(x10)
2400=2x(x10)
2x220x2400=0
x210x1200=0
x2(4030)x1200=0
x(x40)+30(x40)=0
=40kmhr

Hence the speed of the bus=40kmhr
