Question

A capacitor initially given a charge Qo is connected across a resistor R at t=0. The separation between the plates changes according to, d=do1+t (0t<1).. The variation of charge with time is Qo(x+t)1/RCo. The value of x is ______.

Solution

Capacitance at t=0,

Co=ϵoAdo

Also, at any time t, capacitance,

C=ϵoAdo/(1+t)=Co(1+t)

Using Kirchhoff's Law,

qCRI=0

qCo(1+t)+Rdqdt=0

dqq=1RCodt(1+t)

[lnq]qQo=1RCo[ln(1+t)]t0

ln(q/Qo)=1RColn(1+t)

ln(q/Qo)=ln(1+t)1/RCo

q=Qo(1+t)1/RCo=Qo(x+t)1/RCo

x=1
