Solution

The correct option is B 12
If Q is the initial charge on capacitor with capacitance C1, the initial energy stored is

Ui=Q22C1

When the two capacitors are connected together, the potential difference across the two capacitors will be the same because they are connected in parallel.

Given that, charge on capacitors distribute equally after connection.

From charge conservation,

Q1+Q2=Q

Q1=Q2

Q1 and Q2 are the final charges on capacitors after connection.

Thus, Q1=Q2=Q2

Using (C=QV), provided that V1=V2

It can be inferred that their capacitances are equal.

Thus,C1=C2=C(say)

Ui=Q22C

Therefore, final energy stored in the two capacitors is

Uf=Q122C+Q222C

Uf=Q28C+Q28C=Q24C

UfUi=12

Option (b) is the correct answer.
