Question

A capacitor of capacity 2μF is charged to a potential difference of 12 V. It is then connected across an inductor of inductance 6μH. What is the current (in A) in the circuit at a time when the potential difference across the capacitor is 6.0 V?

Solution

Initial energy stored in the capacitor,
Ui=12CV2o=12×2×106×(12)2(1)
Final energy, Uf= Energy stored in capacitor + energy stored in inductor

Uf=12CV2+12LI2
Uf=12×2×106×(6)2+12×6×106×I2(2)
Applying the conservation of energy and equating (1) and (2),
Ui=Uf
12×2×106×(12)2=12×2×106×(6)2+12×6×106×I2
I=6 A
