For one side trip :
Let the distance covered be S.
Speed v1=40 km/h
Time taken t1=Sv=S40 h
For return trip :
The distance covered be S
Speed v2=60 km/h
Time taken t2=Sv2=S60 h
Total distance covered =2S
Total time taken ttotal=t1+t2=S40+S60
So, average speed vavg=2Sttotal
vavg=2SS40+S60=2×40×6040+60=48 km/h
