Question

A car is moving with a velocity of 40 m/s. The brakes are applied to retard it at a rate of 2 m/s^2. What will be its velocity after 5 s of applying the brakes?

Solution

Given,
 Initial velocity= u = 40m/s

Acceleration= a = -2m/s^2
( -ve sign is given for accelaration since it is retarding)

t= 5s

from equation of motion, velocity after time t

v= u+at
Applying values

v= 40 + (-2)x 5

v= 30m/s
