Question

A car moves 100 m due east and then 25 due West
(a )What is the distance covered by the car
(b)What is the displacement

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given that:

The distance moved by car in the east = 100m

The distance moved by car due west = 25m

Step 2: a) Calculation of the distance covered by the car:

The distance is a scalar quantity, therefore;

The total distance covered = OA + AB

= 100m +25m

= 125m

Step 3: b) Calculation of the displacement:

Displacement is a vector quantity.

Thus,

The displacement = OA - AB

= 100m - 25m

= 75m ( in east direction).

Thus,

The total distance covered = 125m

Total displacement = 75m ( in east direction)
